The ‘eth’ symbol, written as ð or Ð, played a significant role in the Old and Middle English periods. Relatively few folks are aware of its existence today, largely due to its replacement by the ‘th’ combination. Its sound corresponds to the voiced and unvoiced ‘th’ in words like “this” and “thought”. Sadly, the eth drifted out of use around the 14th century, but it remains an enchanting element of English language history. This symbol reminds us that language continues to evolve over time.#25#
